C2P2 FL Program Creates Leadership Network and Trainings for Families in Non-Traditional Schools
Early this year, the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University launched a new program called Competence and Confidence Partners in Policymaking: Family Leadership for Inclusive Education in Non-Traditional Schools (C2P2 FL).
For many and diverse reasons, an increasing number of families in Pennsylvania are selecting alternative education options such as home schooling, private schools and charter schools and others.
To ensure that these children are afforded a quality education in the least restrictive environment (LRE) in non-traditional educational settings, families must be well versed in the educational standards and best practices of inclusive education.
Funded by the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council, C2P2 FL is designed for families of students who are home schooled, educated in cyber charter schools, charter schools, private schools or parochial schools to offer leadership development training, guidance and technical assistance to help achieve true inclusion for children. In collaboration with Pennsylvania's Education for All Coalition (PEAC) and other stakeholders, the goal is to create a network of family leaders who will work together with educators and administrators to champion inclusive practices for children with disabilities in the non-traditional school community.
Training events are conducted via webinar and cover a wide variety of topics and featuring experts from many areas. In May, guest speaker Tim Gruesel, Director, Quality Enhancement Support Team, Sinking Springs, PA presented "Creating a Vision for Your Child's Future." In October, "Inclusion - Supporting ALL Abilities of Students Learning Together" was presented by guests Diane Perry, Karen Salomon, and Natalie Wieters of the Pennsylvania Education for All Coalition.
On January 22, 2014, Maura McInerney, Esq., Senior Staff Attorney, Education Law Center, will present "Your Child's Rights! Learn the Laws and Rules to Support Your Child's Education."
