Matthew J. Smetona is an assistant professor in the Intellectual Heritage Program. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Temple University in 2010. He is the author of a book, Hegel's Logical Comprehension of the Modern State, published in 2013 by Lexington Books. The book attempts to articulate the conceptual framework Hegel employs when he asserts that the modern state as he conceptualizes it is rational. He has written articles either published or forthcoming in Rethinking Marxism, Telos, and Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy. He has also served as a manuscript referee for Constellations: An International Journal of Critical and Democratic Theory, European Journal of Political Theory, and Journal of Social Philosophy. His research interests center on modern European philosophy, Marxism, and critical social theory. His current research projects seek to articulate the explanatory role of social norms in Marx's critique of political economy and the philosophical foundations of Lukács' political writings.
