Academics

The Intensive English Language Program offers courses in all proficiency levels from elementary to advanced. All skills are taught: writing, reading, speaking, listening.  Click here for general information about the program.

Students are tested in all the skill areas and placed at the beginning of each term.  If great improvement is made by the end of a 7 week session, a student may advance to a higher level.  Students are evaluated through activities, examinations and homework, and are assigned grades.  Progress depends entirely upon student performance, serious study habits and attendance  Click here to learn about placement (levels) and progress.

Extensive reading introduces students to the literature of the United States and helps the student to improve reading speed and comprehension, increases the fluency skills that contribute to language learning and prepares students for the amounts of reading they will be expected to do at University. At all levels, students free-write every day and work on planned writing weekly. The purpose of the writing curriculum is for students to become familiar with and gain practice in academic writing. During the listening/speaking classes, the focus is mainly on fluency and vocabulary development, although accuracy is important in all activities, particularly dialogue writing for oral production and planned oral presentations.  Click here to learn about our curriculum.
