Audio/Visual Equipment

The control room.

The William Maul Measey Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety (ISC) is comprised of two areas--Clinical Simulation and Clinical Skills. The Institute uses Education Management Solutions, Inc. (EMS) integrated simulation management software and audio-video technology.

The EMS Total Skills Center is a web-based software solution that integrates with Total Sim and Total Digital AV. The systems provide the platform for digital recording and web-based viewing for the Clinical Simulation and Clinical Skills areas.

Clinical Simulation

All simulation rooms (354A, 354B, 356A, 356B) contain two pan/tilt zoom cameras for digital recording and a ceiling microphone. In addition, the nursing station module in multipurpose room 357 contains one pan/tilt zoom camera and a microphone. The operation of the A/V equipment occurs remotely via the control room.

The control room houses the operating system for AV production.

  • There are four control stations, one for each sim room. A fifth control station is also available to meet the needs of multiple programs.
  • At each control station, four rooms may be viewed simultaneously. The operator may listen to a room by highlighting the desired room.
  • Each control station also has a dedicated microphone for use as the patient's voice with SimMan or through an overhead speaker.
  • The control room contains a one-way glass viewing window into each sim room for direct unobserved observation.
  • Recorded sessions are indexed post encounter and may be made available to the learner/instructor via the web for remote viewing.

Clinical Skills

Each of the 10 clinical skills examination rooms is equipped with a pan/tilt zoom camera. Additionally, the rooms contain a microphone and 3 headphone jacks for audio monitoring a program via the inside corridor. Data collection is done via hand-held PDAs and then uploaded to a laptop.

The Clinical Skills Control Station contains the EMS Total Skills center software program and Total Digital AV. A split screen monitor allows the operator to view up to 12 rooms simultaneously for processing.

Recorded sessions are indexed post encounter and can be made available to the learner/instructor via the web for remote viewing.
