TUHS Residency Program: Neurology

Overview
The Neurology Residency Program has been utilized to assess resident competency and modify training programs for learners at all levels. As a result, it has produced one published educational abstract. There are two levels of training focused on junior residents and senior/chief residents. Residents at any level can return to practice skills.
Demonstration and skills for junior residents include:
- Patient communication, explanation of the test/post lumbar punctureinstructions
- Informed consent
- Sterile technique
- “Time out“ to verify patient
- Position, prep and drape of the patient
- Procedural kit preparation
- Lidocaine infusion
- Insertion of the needle and obtaining CSF
- Set up and clean-up of the patient simulator
Demonstration and skills for senior/chief residents include:
- Creating supportive learning environment
- Creating an atmosphere facilitating patient physician communication
- Ability to recognize poor exam technique and to correct technique
- Provision of feedback appropriate to learner level
- Emphasis on patient-centered care and team-work
- Evidence-based medicine teaching and didactics
- Utilizing didactics posted on Blackboard™
