TUHS/Professional Staff Programs

TUHS professional training session

Overview

The William Maul Measey Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety (ICS) and the Temple University Health System (TUHS) work collaboratively to develop programs for health care staff. Programs are created with a focus on improving patient care and safety. The ICS has provided learning opportunities for physical therapists, nurses, paramedics, and physicians.

Temple Transport Team (T3):

Temple Transport Team (T3) was created to ensure that the world class, academic medical center resources of Temple University Health System hospitals are available to all critically ill patients. T3 provides rapid, reliable transportation for critically ill and injured patients using state-of-the-art ground ambulances and a medical transport helicopter. The "teams" are comprised of skilled and knowledgeable paramedics, nurses and medical physicians. The individuals serving on the teams are required to participate in assessment programs where they must demonstrate competency. Procedural skills, equipment knowledge, critical thinking, and critical care patient management are all evaluated. The ICS is utilized for many of the assessment programs.

Annual Clinical Skills Review:

Competencies include:

  • Knowledge assessment
    - Evaluation of the critically ill patient (medical or trauma)
    - Resuscitation of the critically ill patient
    - Diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias
    - Diagnosis and treatment of airway obstructions
  • Skills assessment
. Basic and advanced airway management
    . Cardiac monitor/defibrillator use
    . Invasive hemodynamic monitoring
    . Transcutaneous pacing
. Peripheral and central venous access

Airway and Ventilator Management:

Competencies include:

  • Recognize the need for advanced airway management
  • Initiate appropriate treatment plan and adjust as required
  • Initiate plan for mechanical ventilation
  • Assess ventilation settings and change plan of care as indicated

T3 Annual Medical Command Recertification:

Competencies include:

  • Equipment competency
    - Glucometer
    - Needle pleural decompression
    - EZ-IO placement
    - T-Pod pelvic binder
    - Endotracheal tube introducer
    - Express Mini 500 chest drainage
    - Cook-Melker cricothyrotomy kit
    - Pericardial centesis
  • Critical thinking and AMI patient management

TUH IV Competency Program:

Temple University Hospital Nursing Orientation includes an IV Insertion Competency Program. Phase 1 of the program is held at the ICS and includes the use of multi-venous IV training arms for instruction and participant practice. Upon successful completion of the orientation program, the nurse is then ready to complete phase 2 of the program. Phase 2 of the competency program includes demonstrating proficiency for IV insertion with patients.

The focus of the program is on proper peripheral IV insertion. The following topics are addressed:

  • Patient safety
  • Indications for initiating IV therapy
  • Anatomy
    - Site selection
    - Areas to avoid
  • Infection control
    - Complications
  • Equipment required for IV insertion
    - Catheter selection
  • Insertion technique
    - Documentation
  • Site changes
  • Guidelines
