The College of Health Professions Department of Physical Therapy uses the William Maul Measey Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety (ICS) as part of its second and third year curriculum.
Second year Physical Therapy students utilize the patient simulator to enhance psychomotor skills and gain experience in obtaining and interpreting vital sign data including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and auscultation of lungs. Students evaluate the information gathered in the examination to arrive at patient care decisions, including diagnosis, prognosis and plan of care. Both normal and abnormal patient findings are discussed during this program.
Third year Physical Therapy students participate in two patient simulation scenarios. The students are presented with an acutely ill patient or a patient with multiple-system co-morbidities with a goal of having the patient sit over the side of the bed to improve his upright tolerance.
Objectives of this scenario include:
