College of Health Professions and Social Work:
Physical Therapy

Overview

The College of Health Professions and Social Work Department of Physical Therapy uses the William Maul Measey Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety (ICS) as part of its second and third year curriculum.

Management of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Impairments:

Second year Physical Therapy students utilize the patient simulator to enhance psychomotor skills and gain experience in obtaining and interpreting vital sign data including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and auscultation of lungs. Students evaluate the information gathered in the examination to arrive at patient care decisions, including diagnosis, prognosis and plan of care. Both normal and abnormal patient findings are discussed during this program.

Clinical Examination and Intervention Skills:

Third year Physical Therapy students participate in two patient simulation scenarios. The students are presented with an acutely ill patient or a patient with multiple-system co-morbidities with a goal of having the patient sit over the side of the bed to improve his upright tolerance.

Objectives of this scenario include:

  • Recognition of an acutely ill patient and selection of appropriate interventions to accomplish therapeutic goals
  • Identification, indications for, and management/proper handling of ancillary equipment during patient treatment
  • Appropriate strategies to monitor the patient's response during the intervention
  • Evaluation of the patient's response to an intervention and using clinical decision making to continue or discontinue an intervention
