About Our Institute

The School of Medicine launched the Institute for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety (ICS) in July 2005. The ICS encompasses the use of Clinical Simulation, Standardized Patients and Surgical Skills. The multidisciplinary institute offers unique learning opportunities for medical students, residents, attending physicians, nursing students, physical therapy students, and other allied health students and professionals.

The mission of the ICS is to:

  • Provide excellence in the training of the art and science of medicine and surgery, utilizing a traditional laboratory setting as well as state-of-the-art virtual reality and simulation to learners including practicing physicians and residents, emergency response personnel and medical, nursing and allied health students and professionals.
  • Facilitate maintenance of clinical and procedural skills for all levels of learners in order to promote patient safety.
  • Enable high quality research in medical and surgical education including the development of innovative technologies for teaching clinical procedural and cognitive skills.

The ICS uses multiple modalities, including high and low-fidelity and virtual reality simulators as well as simulation using our Standardized Patient program, to fulfill our mission to become a leader in education and patient safety initiatives in our region.

The ICS receives support from multiple sources including the Temple University Health System (TUHS) whose constituents are encouraged to use the ICS for educational development. Learning opportunities are also available to groups outside TUHS.
