Study Groups

2010-11 Study Groups

Deadline for 2011-12 is Monday, September 26, 2011.

Download complete application guidelines.

Consultation is available for shaping group funding proposals. Contact Peter Logan.

Study Groups support group research projects on topics in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. They assist faculty and students from different departments, schools, and colleges who wish to work together for the year exploring a shared area of intellectual interest. By promoting conversations across disciplinary boundaries, Study Groups enhance scholarship and the intellectual life of the humanities at Temple.

CHAT supplies Study Groups with a physical space for meetings and $400 for expenses, such as books, copying, and travel. CHAT is also able to assist in arranging and promoting Group events. Any two full-time faculty members from different departments may propose a Study Group. Each group should have a minimum of four members. Membership is open to all, including students and faculty outside of Temple. It is expected that these groups will meet monthly (or more often) throughout the year.

The Application

  • Applications are 2-3 pages and should explain the focus of the Study Group, provide a brief justification for forming a group on that topic, and indicate the projected schedule of activities for the year. Where appropriate, identify the anticipated outcome, such as publication(s), a grant application, or the initiation of longer term programs for further collaborative research.
  • Include an itemized budget of planned expenses, including honoraria, travel, hospitality, and publicity (please note that the maximum honorarium is $350).
  • Include a C.V. for both faculty organizers and identify at least two additional members.

Study Groups submit a report on activities at the end of the year and may reapply for continued funding the following year. Support can continue as long as the year-end report and the request for the following year indicate that such a continuance is warranted. All proposals will be vetted by the Center for the Humanities Advisory Board and award decisions will be based on the quality of the proposal, the feasibility of the project, and the potential contribution to scholarship and  intellectual life at Temple.

Applications should be transmitted electronically to chat@temple.edu by Sept. 26, 2011. Please contact Peter Logan with any questions at peter.logan@temple.edu or 215 204-8567.
