I feel Temple would save alot of money if they created a automotive shop to service and repair all of
Temples vehicles. A small crew that works on all of the various cars, trucks and equipment that we use. I
know for my dept, Temple Police, we run our cars 24/7. We are constantly putting them in the shop for
one reason or another. These dealerships and/or mechanic shops know Temple is footing the bill with
almost no questions ask, so they charge us ridiculous prices. Although hiring a few people and statrting up
a shop would cost money, I strongly feel that it would pay for itself in no time, when you consider all of
the vehicles and equipment Temple uses on a daily basis between facilitys, grounds, police etc.

offer credit of some sort for community service and have students do landscaping and maintenence of
that sort - no more leaf blowers
Suggestion
Close buildings on Fridays and recommend telecommuting on that day to save energy costs. Many
institutions have begun to do this and it has a positive impact on quality of life, productivity, and saves
money.

I would suggest, in the fashion of other universities and work places, having summer hours for the
offices that are able to do so. A second idea would be to replace our florescent lighting (which is awful for
one`s eyes anyway) with lamp lighting. This way we could use energy efficient light bulbs. Thank you!

consolidate some of the schools and colleges - other large institutions have fewer schools and colleges

Be efficient at work and overtime will not be needed.

I think that during the summer there should be a skeleton crew that works instead of the whole office.
Especially since it is not busy. We should let everyone take one unpaid day off per week. That would
help us cut the cost.
Filler
Suggestion
Other cost saving ideas that I`ve heard of are that many companies and municipal jobs have initiated and
asked employees if they would take a cut in work week hours or take one day off a month w/o pay, but
compensated in some other way.

more on campus student jobs...pay less, employ students

Perhaps the university could find a "fun" way to promote this cost saving initiative to keep it in the front
of our minds. I`m thinking some type of friendly character (like the Geico gecko, Pillsbury Dough Boy,
etc.) with a catchy slogan, using posters, buttons, stickers, prizes for cost saving suggestions, a
permanent column in the Temple Times newspaper highlighting suggestions, contributors, and their realized
cost savings thus far, etc. Maybe this effort could be a collaboration between our publications
department (for communications and distribution), Tyler School of Art (to come up with the cost saving
"character"...prize for the winning submission), and our marketing department (for the
slogan/message/campaign promotion expertise). This concept could also be promoted using the Temple`s
Web site (mandate this be incorporated into all department websites with a financial incentive to do so),
YouTube, MySpace, emails to students, faculty, and employees, etc.

Temple University should implement a 4 day work week (four 10 hour days).
Filler
Suggestion
The University might consider giving departments the option of offering 4-day work weeks (4 10-hour
days vs. 5 -8-hour days) to all staff members. As long as the depatment has sufficient coverage this
would help all members save a few dollars to offset the lack of raises and recessionary economy, as the
costs to commute, lunches on campus, and parking would be reduced by 20 pc. .

Suggestion
Offer the option of a 35 hour work week with corresponding reduced salary.

A university wide four-day work week.

Suggestion
In order to save money, all University employees should be required to take an unpaid day off each
Friday in June. Spread the unpaid days over the course of the March-June pay periods so that each
paycheck is reduced by only one day`s pay.

Consolidate the computer labs of all departments/colleges. I personally work for a departmental computer
lab, and there is a lot of waste in terms of time, money, and space. Further more, these individual labs
don`t always leverage the existing systems that the University provides (ie, TUSecure logins, etc). The
equipment and staff of these other labs should be absorbed, integrated, and housed in the Tech Center.

I think that going to 4 day work weeks would definately save on resources, heating etc.

Integrate appropriate departments and capital projects e.g. architecture and engineering students and
faculty for new building design

I think there are many departments that do not need 12 month staffing. The university could assess
those departments that could reduce staffing by two months without disruption in services. Most people
would rather have their position reduced by 2 months than to loose their job outright. Also, there are some
universities, i.e. Old Dominian, that have staff work an 11 month assignment and cover the summer
months by having 1/3 of the staff off at any one time. Any measures that would reduce hours but save
jobs could be a benefit to all parties, the university, the staff and the students.

My cost saving suggestion would be to have summer hours. Either no work on Fridays or half days. My
previous institution did that and i heard that it was done for cost saving reasons. Also, if employees won`t
be receiving raises due to the economy this would be a nice way to pay them back in a non-financial
way. We had summer hours June, July and August.

Closed Temple on Fridays in the Summer time. Employees can make up time Mon-Thursday. Montco and
CCP has been doing this for years.
