FMLA expanded for military leave
Temple’s Family and Medical Leave policy will be updated to reflect legislation that expands the Family Medical Leave Act to provide unpaid leave to employees who are caregivers of wounded military personnel and to employees whose family members are about to go on active military duty.
Effective Jan. 28, 2008, employees are eligible for up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave during one 12-month period to provide care to injured U.S. military personnel. The employee must be a spouse, child, parent or nearest blood relative of the service member.
An additional expansion will be effective as soon as the U.S. Department of Labor issues final regulations. That expansion will provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to employees whose immediate family members (spouses, children or parents) are soldiers, reservists or members of the National Guard who are or are about to go on active military duty for any “qualifying exigency,” such as an overseas assignment, recall to active duty or troop mobilization.

“Diversity Goes to the Movies”
As most of us know by now, the 2008 edition of the Princeton Review’s annual college guidebook, The Best 366 Colleges, has ranked Temple’s undergraduate student body the most diverse in the nation. What does diversity mean to you? Come out and attend the last of the “Diversity Goes To The Movies” sessions. On March 24, clips from the movie Crash will be shown to spark conversation around diversity. We will supply the popcorn, and you can supply the “food” for thought.
This 2004 film depicts several characters living in Los Angeles during a 36-hour period and brings them together through car accidents, shootings and carjackings. Most of the characters depicted in the film are racially prejudiced in some way and become involved in conflicts that force them to examine their own prejudices. Through these characters’ interactions, the film seeks to depict and examine not only racial tension, but also the distance between strangers in general.
The session will be on March 24, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the University Learning Center, room 250, Mitten Hall. To register, go to www.temple.edu/hr/training, or call 215-204-1683 for more information.
