The University provides eligible full-time employees with group term life insurance that is non-contributory. The amount of the basic life insurance varies, depending upon the job classification and/or any applicable collective bargaining agreement in effect.
The following groups of employees are eligible for $10,000 of basic life insurance:
Non-union administrative and staff employees
Non-union faculty members
Employees represented by AFSCME
Employees represented by Local 835 and 835A
Nurses represented by TUHNA
BUE employees are eligible for $12,000 of basic life insurance.
Faculty and employees of TAUP and the Law School are eligible for $18,000 basic life insurance.
Eligible employees may elect to purchase additional life insurance in the amounts of 1.5, 2 or 3 times their annual base salary. The aggregate total amount of basic and supplemental lifeinsurance is subject to a maximum value. Employees pay the full cost of this additional insurance, with the rates based on age.
If additional life insurance is elected within 31 days of initial eligibility, there is no requirement to produce medical evidence of insurability. If you want to elect additional life insurance after 31 days after your initial eligibility, you must complete the Medical Evidence of Insurability form. For the medical evidence of insurability form and related questions, please contact Kristen Mchenry in the Benefits office.
Eligible employees may elect to purchase accidental death and dismemberment insurance coverage. AD&D coverage amounts range from $10,000 to $150,000, and employees may enroll or change coverage elections effective the first of any month, with no medical evidence required. Coverage is available for employee only, or employee plus dependents. If dependent coverage is elected, the employee’s spouse is covered for one fifth (1/5) of the face value of the policy, children for one tenth (1/10).
