Benjamin Talton
Modern Africa, Imperialism and Resistance, African Diaspora
My research and teaching interests have been shaped by a concern for relationships between local communities and the state in modern Africa and the African diaspora. I am particularly interested in institutions and practices in colonial and postcolonial Africa that contributed to disparities in social status such as chieftaincy, religion, ethnicity, and imperialism. I also have an interest in transnational politics, particularly as it relates to political activism and humanitarian efforts concerned with Africa among people of African descent.
