Research and Teaching Interests:

My research interests center on Britain and the British Atlantic world in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries.  I am particularly interested in the ways that the Atlantic world functioned as a zone of cultural, economic, and intellectual exchange. I am also interested in the ways that domestic British life was changed by an involvement in the wider Atlantic world.

My current project examines the efforts of an Anglican missionary organization, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, to convert black and Native American peoples at various sites around the Atlantic.  I am investigating what these missionary encounters reveal about the development of ideas about slavery and race over the course of the eighteenth century.

I teach in areas including British history, European history, and Atlantic history.
