Herbert J. Ershkowitz
19th-Century U.S., Political
At the present time I am writing a biography of the Philadelphia merchant, political, and religious leader John Wanamaker. I have also recently done research on the Antimasonic movement during the Jacksonian era and expect to publish several articles on this topic. My teaching interests are in nineteenth-century social and political history, particularly in the forty-year period prior to the Civil War. Students interested in nineteenth and early twentieth century Philadelphia might also wish to work with me. Currently I am working on a study of Philadelphia during World War II with a special emphasis on race and ethnicity.
