William W. Cutler III

U.S. Education

My research and teaching interests are varied but focus on the history of American education, history education, and Philadelphia history. I am currently at work on a book about the relationship between citizens and schools in the United States from the beginning of World War II to the end of the civil rights era. I write occasionally about the scholarship of teaching and learning, building on my experience as a fellow at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. My work in progress on the relationship between citizens and schools will draw significantly on Philadelphia sources, including the papers of the Citizens Committee on Public Education and selected neighborhood associations. I have written recently on the history of the Episcopal Church in the Philadelphia area, and this work will continue. Last year I developed and taught a course in the university's new general program entitled, "Mirror to America: "Higher Education and American Life." It complements my undergraduate course on the history of childhood and adolescence, "Growing Up in America." I have co-taught a graduate course called "Teaching History in College."
