Vision

The vision of the Health Information Management Department at Temple University is to be a leader in educating, developing and promoting the professional practice of health information management at regional, state, and national levels.

Mission

The mission of health information management education is to prepare confident, innovative, and contributing professionals who can identify and use a variety of information resources and technologies to accomplish the objectives of diverse practice environments. The educational program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become self-directed learners who possess critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities as well as communication and interpersonal skills. It instills a commitment to life-long learning and important ethical values. The educational process fosters the acquisition of leadership abilities and systems thinking necessary for adapting careers within a changing healthcare environment. The faculty and graduates of this program serve society and the profession through collaborative practice, innovative teaching, and the generation and application of new knowledge about health information management through practice based research.

Departmental Goals

  • Educate students to become competent health information practitioners across the continuum of health care who are able to meet the needs of a variety of employers, such as: health care organizations, insurance companies, governmental agencies, pharmaceutical organizations, and software vendors.
  • Provide continuing education and other health information management services to the health information management community, organizations, and individuals.
  • Provide leadership in HIM education and professional service, including advocacy for patients and consumers.
  • Promote the transition to the electronic health record (EHR) through curriculum innovations and advancement in practice.
  • Support faculty development through continuing education programs, enrollment in graduate programs and mentoring.
