Beginning the Journey
At the start of any journey, it's a good idea to take the time to consider where you want to go and whether you are prepared to undertake the journey. It's no different when you're preparing to undertake a course of study that will lead to specific career goals. So, it's important to take the time to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses, and consider how well prepared you are to undertake the course of study necessary to reach your goal.
First, consider the courses you have taken previously, either in high school or college. Which did you find interesting and engaging? Which did you do well in?
Second, consider the ways you have experienced working with others. Many people who express an interest in a career in health care say they are interested because they want to help others. There are many ways to help and each calls upon somewhat different interpersonal skills. Sometimes the only way to discover whether you are interested in working in a clinical or laboratory setting is to gain that experience through volunteering, shadowing, or working in a research lab.
