The Program
The Temple Medical Scholars Program, a BA/MD program, provides outstanding students provisional admission to the Temple University School of Medicine at the same time they are accepted into one of Temple's undergraduate colleges. Medical Scholars are expected to participate in the Honors Certificate program (first two years, General Education focus) and can opt also to participate in the Honors Scholars program (second two years, major and research focus). Typically, Medical Scholars have a varied range of interests, both curricular and extracurricular, and they are encouraged to pursue those interests as part of their preparation for medical school.
While many pursue majors in the sciences, Medical Scholars can choose a major in the humanities, the arts, the social sciences, or any of Temple's other undergraduate programs. As undergraduates, Medical Scholars are expected to comply with all Temple University academic requirements, as well as all requirements of the Honors Program and all entrance requirements of the School of Medicine.
Medical Scholars are expected to take advantage of the special opportunities offered throughout the year: special lectures on various aspects of modern medicine, conversations with Temple scientists and physicians, tours of Temple Hospital facilities, and discussions of some of the many changes taking place within the practice of medicine.
To be accepted to Temple Medical School, Medical Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and achieve a score of at least 10 on each numerically graded portion of the Medical College Admission Test. In addition, Medical Scholars must demonstrate the motivation and personal qualities suitable for success in medical school and a career in medicine. This suitability should be demonstrated in supportive letters from faculty and the pre-health studies advisor. Medical Scholars who meet these requirements are offered conditional admission to Temple Medical School and expected to maintain their academic standing through their senior year. After completing their undergraduate degree, they will then begin their professional medical training in the Temple University School of Medicine, leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
