Medicine

Considering Medical School

Physicians examine patients, diagnose illness, and treat injuries and diseases. They may be general practitioners or specialize in a particular field of medicine such as internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, or psychiatry.

The degrees awarded by medical schools are the M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) and D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy). Graduates of schools of medical schools are employed in a variety of settings including private practice, hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and HMO's.

Undergraduate Preparation

The Health Professions Advising Center provides pre-med advising for students interested in entering schools of allopathic or osteopathic medicine.

There is a great deal of information for undergraduates interested in applying for medical school located in the MEDICAL SCHOOL APPLICATION MANUAL regarding academic preparation and the application process. Put together by accumulating information from our experience, the experience of Temple students applying to and gaining admission to medical school, as well as the thoughts of some of the most prominent Health Professions advisors in the country, it can be an important guide for you. Included in discussion are course requirements, a time line, personal statements, letters of recommendation, the MCAT, and many other topics you will want to be familiar with. We highly recommend reading it at your leisure.
