Are You Prepared for the Road Ahead?

 

Now that you have assessed your academic strengths and identified a career goal, you should take a moment to gauge whether you are prepared to undertake the course of study necessary to achieve your goal.  The profile below will help you determine whether your previous academic achievement is appropriate preparation for your career goal.  You might not have a perfect match to the criteria indicated.  That's okay, the criteria will help you identify potential areas where you will need additional help or preparation along the way.

A career in PHARMACY requires at least two years of undergraduate study followed by four years of study in Pharmacy School.   A successful career in pharmacy requires a commitment to preparing yourself for a rigorous and demanding course of study and seeking out meaningful shadowing, volunteer, or internship experience in pharmacy or a closely related area.

Typically, students interested in pursuing studies that will lead to a career in Pharmacy share the following attributes:

HIGH SCHOOL PROFILES of UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Desirable SAT Score: >= 1100a
HS Rank: Top 40%a
HS GPA: 3.00
High School Sciences: Biology and Chemistry are required, Physics is recommended a
High School Math: Algebra I-II, Geometry and Trigonometry are required, Pre-Calculus is recommended(a)

(a)High School graduates with an SAT >= 1200, in the top 25% of their class, having completed Physics & Pre-Calculus may be considered for admission as Rx Scholars.

*Please note that the respective programs try to balance several factors when considering students for admissions. Thus, individuals who do not meet all of the guidelines may be considered by a program.

COLLEGE PROFILES of UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
considering admission to Pharmacy School

Possible majors: Students interested in careers in Pharmacy typically major in a natural or physical sciences.  Pre-Pharmacy students follow the curriculum for Chemistry majors.
Required Courses: Biology, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, English, and Macroeconomics
Recommended Courses:  
Science GPA 3.5
Cumulative GPA: 3.5
Hours/Degree Required

          64 - 67 hrs

Desirable PCAT Score: Minimum composite 50%

Once you have completed your Pre-Pharmacy course work, the road to a career in Pharmacy includes the following time and application requirements:
