What is Occupational Therapy?
This profession addresses the physical, cognitive, psychological, cultural, and social needs of patients requiring therapy. Occupational therapists identify the elements of an injury or handicap that prevent patients from performing essential tasks. They use purposeful everyday activities, termed “occupations,” to help patients improve their performance, increase their independence, and adapt to their environment. Occupational therapists are vital caregivers, teachers, and healers who help patients by incorporating meaningful, functional activity into their lives.

What programs of study does Temple offer in Occupational Therapy (OT)?
Temple University offers a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT), which is a professional entry-level degree. A Master of Science (MS) degree is available for persons who are Registered Occupational Therapists.
What is studied in the MOT?Professional candidates study the foundation courses of Neuroatomy, Physiology, Occupations in Promotion of Health, Anatomy, Human Development and Clinical Conditions. In the professional component of the program, they study professional issues, theories, assessment and intervention with an emphasis on children, adults and older adults. In the service delivery component of the program, they study Research Design and Methodology, Service Management and Delivery. In this component students also have Fieldwork expectations connected to several courses as well as a six-month, full-time supervised clinical fieldwork assignment. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Certification Examination administered by the National Board for Certification In Occupational Therapy.
How long does it take to complete the MOT program?The MOT is a 67-credit, full-time, year-round program which begins in July and takes 24 months to complete.
What are the prerequisites for entering the MOT program?MOT applicants must have an undergraduate degree and have successfully completed the following courses:
• Two semesters of a natural science with a lab (Selected from Anatomy, Physiology, Physics, Chemistry or Biology)
• Two courses in the social sciences (e.g., Intro to Psychology, Sociology or Anthropology)
• Developmental Psychology-Life Span
• Abnormal Psychology or Theories of Personality
• Statistics (Social Science or Education)
• Computer literacy.
ABOUT THE MS
What is studied in the MS program?Course work is grouped within a number of 3-4 course specialties in the MS program, including Assistive Technology, Pediatrics, Gerontology, Administration, Research, Work and Injury Prevention, and Upper Extremity Rehabilitation and Disability Studies. Students may select the combination of specialties to match their professional needs and interests.
How long does it take to complete the MS program?The MS program is a 36-credit program of advanced, theoretical and applied information. It is designed for working professionals and can be completed at the student’s pace. Courses are scheduled on evenings and weekends and in weeklong sessions. Some graduate assistantships are available for full-time students.
What are the prerequisites for the MS program?Applicants must: hold an undergraduate degree; be certified occupational therapists (OTR); and be graduates of ACOTE-accredited or SFOT-approved entry-level occupational therapy programs.
Which Temple campuses offer OT?Students’ professional study is completed at the College of Health Professions (CHP) at Temple University’s Health Sciences Center which encompasses Temple’s Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Schools as well as the University’ world-renowned Hospital, famous for its work in cardiology, and Temple University Children’s Medical Center. With ready access to the University’s new School of Podiatric Medicine in Center City Philadelphia, CHP offers OT students an excellent opportunity for cross-disciplinary learning in a comprehensive health care environment.
What is the application process for OT?Candidates should apply directly to the Occupational Therapy department. The deadline for MOT applications is February 1 for students wishing to matriculate in July. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or millers Analogy Test (MAT), letters of recommendation, student observation of occupational therapy practice and an interview are required for admission to the MOT program.
The MS Program has rolling admissions. Students can matriculate in any semester. The GRE or MAT is required, as well as work experience in occupational therapy and an interview.
