Temple University Nonprofit Development ProgramThe nonprofit sector is an essential component in the provision of human services in Pennsylvania. Increasingly, agencies and community organizations of all sizes are confronted with a multitude of challenges. The increased competition for limited funding and evolving social problems require nonprofits to be effective mangers of limited resources, to utilize research as a tool in the development of effective services and to use best management practices in handling personnel, developing programs and meeting community needs. The Temple University Nonprofit Development Program (TUNDP) is a research, training and consulting service provided by Temple University Harrisburg in central Pennsylvania. TUNDP is designed to assist nonprofit and governmental human services in developing the capacity to effectively serve their communities through best practices in management, research and training. The program brings together the expertise and skills of Temple University’s faculty, staff and students with local service providers–thus enabling them to better serve their clients through innovative and research supported intervention approaches. The services of TUNDP are customized to meet the needs of individual agencies and community groups. The program can assist agency staff and/or board members in assessing their community needs, grant writing, management and board training, program design and outcomes evaluations. Projects
Advanced Grant Writing SeminarAdvanced Grant Writing Seminar: Temple University Harrisburg and the School of Social Administration through the Temple University Non Profit Development and Evaluation program is pleased to offer an advanced grant writing seminar series designed to provide participants with the knowledge and resources to submit for government and foundation support. The purpose of this three session seminar series is to guide participants through the grant writing process. Abstinence Education EvaluationTwo faculty members in the TempleNEST are actively engaged in evaluation of abstinence education programs. They are available to help schools and nonprofit organizations to plan, implement, and evaluate abstinence education programs. Dr. David Zanis is the principle evaluator for the Schuylkill County multi-year Community Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) program. This is an advanced program model which goes beyond curriculum delivery to include a spectrum of social interventions that address parental involvement, abuse situations, self efficacy needs, and long term follow up. Dr. Barry Nazar is the principle evaluator for the newly funded Smart Choices CBAE program being implemented through the Lincoln Intermediate Unit in York, Adams, and Franklin counties. The Smart Choices program adopts the Schuylkill County model described above, except that it expands into high school and migrant target populations. Dr. Zanis published a study in the journal, Children & Schools, vol. 27 (2005) examining the near term effects of abstinence only curricula in an alternative school setting of at risk students. The findings established the foundations for the Schuylkill model. Zanis and Nazar are collaborating on another study examining the predictors of early sexual activity and risk factors that should be addressed in teen pregnancy prevention efforts. Long term follow up studies are also in progress. In October 2008, the TempleNEST hosted a one day conference in Harrisburg on Abstinence Education. This is expected to become an annual event. Shortly, the TempleNEST website will feature a subscription listserv to keep subscribers apprised of these and other activities and opportunities (e.g., funding announcements). Please subscribe when this become available.
