A SAMPLE OF WORKSHOPS

Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Disorders Specialized Field Learning Opportunity

Alison Aldrich, LCSW-R: Silver School of Social Work, New York University

The seminar will present the development and execution of an ‘emergent field opportunity´ that was developed for Advanced Concentration Students at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University in an attempt to provide support and a deepening of skills for students who want to work with individuals with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders and their families. In this regard the development of a curriculum, selection and coordination of field placements, collaboration with the NYS Office of Alcohol and Substance Services (OASAS) and the results of a program evaluation will be discussed.

Sexual Orientation & Supervision

Rachel Imboden, MSW

Sexual orientation uniquely impacts the way a social work student views and understands their world. Unfortunately, the influence of sexual orientation on LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) students´ experiences within field work as well as the relationship with their supervisors is often overlooked. The primary goal of this workshop is to assist field educators in facilitating LGB students´ personal and professional identities. While much of the presentation will be specifically pertinent for heterosexual supervisors, information will be useful for the LGB supervisor as well.

Using Technology to Enhance Student Learning, Field Instructor Training & Program Collaboration

Dr. Jennifer Clements, PhD, LCSW: Shippensburg University, Dr. Liz Fisher, PhD, LSW: Shippensburg University, and Dr. Heather Girvin, PhD, MSS: Millersville University

This workshop will provide an overview of the various ways in which Millersville University (MU) and Shippensburg University (SU) Field Departments utilize technology to enhance field experiences for students, field instructors, and other stakeholders. The MU SU collaborative MSW Program has provided unique opportunities to incorporate technology into educational, training, and administrative development at the BSW and MSW levels. The presenters will discuss: using Blackboard and other technology to streamline the student placement process; using online modules to augment training opportunities for field instructors; using Blackboard and other distance learning strategies to facilitate collaboration across programs; and the development of an online community of Field Instructors and students with shared field materials and discussion boards. Participants will be invited to discuss their ideas and experiences related to the role of technology in field education. The workshop will provide a forum for the exchange of information and a platform for the discussion of ways in which field educators in the region can use technology to share field resources, such as training modules and supplemental learning materials.

Ethics in Field Education

Claudia Dewane, LCSW, D.Ed.: Temple University Harrisburg

This workshop will focus on various ethical issues in field education as related to students, field instructors and agency issues.

Supervising Challenging Students

Joshua Okundaye Ph.D., LCSW-C: University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Social work field educators often face difficult supervisory challenges during the field experience. This seminar focuses on the following issues: reasonable academic expectations and behavior; recognizing challenging behaviors (“red flags”); steps to take when seeing “red flags”; compliance with due process; and justification for a failing grade or dismissal.

Happy Endings(Lunch session and celebration for current TUH field instructors only)

TUH Field Education Staff (Tammy Carson-Sandman and Virginia Teter)

This lunch session will focus on termination and evaluation issues as they relate to students in the field.
