Course 1: Victimization and Abuse of Older Adults: Legal and Social Work Perspectives

This course will provide an introduction and in depth analysis of the most frequent forms of elder victimization outlining what is known about the etiology of the three primary forms of mistreatment, e.g., financial exploitation, care giver neglect and abuse (physical, sexual, and emotional). It will also present existing legislation on the topic and review mechanisms for professionals to utilize to assist older clients who are identified as victims of mistreatment and abuse. Ethical issues involved in intervention will also be presented. This course fulfills the 3 hours ethics requirement by the state licensing board.

Course 2: Common Diseases in the Elderly: An Overview

This course will provide an overview of the common presenting signs and symptoms, as well as treatments in cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases; diabetes mellitus (types 1 and 2); musculoskeletal diseases; neurological disease; cancer and genitourinary and gastrointestinal disorders. This day is designed to be a comprehensive review of the major disease systems impacted upon the elderly and will be an excellent introduction, or refresher, for nurses and social workers.

Course 3: Common Cognitive and Psychiatric Diseases in the Elderly and Related Legal Issues: An Overview

This course will provide an overview of the common presenting signs and symptoms, etiology, assessment, treatment and legal interventions, when needed, of cognitive and emotional disorders of aging including dementia, delirium, Alzheimer´s Disease, depression, generalized anxiety disorder and other related disorders. The course will be taught from an interdisciplinary perspective including nursing, law and social work.

Fees & Registration Information

The cost for each course is $130 and includes the CE certificate processing fee.

    CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS

    SOCIAL WORKERS
    Each course has been approved for six (6) continuing education hours by Temple University, a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors. Course 1 fulfills the ethics requirement by the state licensing board.

    NURSES
    Temple University College of Health Professions and Social Work Department of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association; course one has been approved for 5.0 contact hours and courses two and three have each been approved for 5.5 contact hours.
