Graduate Teacher Certification Program, Post-Baccalaureate (non-degree)

The Post Baccalaureate Certification Program allows students and working professionals who hold undergraduate degrees in fields outside of education to earn Intern and Instructional I Certificates in the State of Pennsylvania. The program does not award students the Master of Education degree. Students who want teacher certification and the Master of Education degree should apply to the Graduate Teacher Certification Master´s Program (M.Ed).

There are two specializations within PBCP available at Harrisburg.

Elementary Education - This is the specialization for people interested in teaching elementary - school students. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be certified to teach students in grades kindergarten through six. Under certain conditions, elementary certified teachers can also teach kindergarten through eight.

Special Education - This specialization is for people who are interested in teaching children with mental or physical disabilities in grades kindergarten through twelve.

Program Requirements:

Most students complete the program as part timers in about two years. Full time enrollment is also available and requires about one year to complete. . The length of the program is between 21 and 24 semester hours, depending on the student´s teaching specialty. One semester of full-time supervised teaching is required. There is no required comprehensive examination.

Students may earn no more than two grades of B- quality, nor more than one F, beginning with the semester during which they apply to the Program. Students must achieve at least a 3.0 grade point average to graduate.

Although some exceptions apply, an applicant must have at least a 3.0 undergraduate grade point average in order to be admitted. Passing Praxis I is also an admission requirement.

Admission Requirements:

Admission is determined according to a Statement of Professional Plans and Goals, undergraduate and graduate grade point average, successful completion of the Praxis I examination, and two professional letters of recommendation.

Please note that the application to the Post-Baccalaureate program does not require a formal application to the Graduate School of Temple University since you are not applying to a degree program. Do not apply to the Graduate School if you are interested only in the Post-Baccalaureate program. Instead, use the online form available below.

A completed application will include:

  • Post-Baccalaureate Application form [pdf] ( downloadable form)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and graduate schools attended.
  • Praxis I scores.
  • Two letters of recommendation (see Reference Report for Graduate Study [pdf]).
  • A goal statement that outlines professional interests.
  • No personal interview is required

Admission Deadlines:
October 1st for spring admission

April 1st for fall admission

Completed applications received by these deadlinese are guaranteed a decision for the next term. Applications received after these deadlines will be considered on a space available basis. It takes applicants about three weeks to learn an admission decision once an application is completed.
