About the Program

The program´s mission is to advance the understanding of learning, cognition, human development, and instructional technology as these processes apply to educational processes and practices. The Educational Psychology program is characterized by a strong theoretical and research orientation, the interplay of theory and practice, an interdisciplinary approach, and a commitment to service. The program includes two options for specialization:

The Master's Degree program consists of two options for specialization:

General Educational Psychology
This concentration provides a general preparation in the broad field of Educational Psychology with the courses focusing on three major areas: learning and conceptual processes, human development, and applied data analysis and research methodology. Students in this concentration are typically using the degree as a bridge to a doctoral program in Educational Psychology or a related field.

Professional Development for Teachers
This concentration is designed for in-service teachers who are seeking to up-grade their skills in areas relevant to Educational Psychology. The program is flexible in that half of the courses are designed in collaboration with the specific audience for the program.

Program Requirements

The Educational Psychology M.Ed. program requires that students successfully complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of required coursework (depending upon the concentration) and pass a comprehensive examination. Most courses are offered in the evening to accommodate working professionals. The length of time to complete the master´s degree program varies depending upon the number of courses taken each semester. Students may enroll part-time or full-time.

Non-degree Student Policy:

A student may complete 9 credits prior to admission to a degree program. All courses except Doctoral seminars are open to non-matriculated students.

Admission Requirements

Admission is based on a combination of academic and personal factors. The applicant must provide evidence of successful academic performance and aptitude for graduate level study as documented by undergraduate and graduate grade point averages, scores on the Graduate Record Examination or Miller Analogies Test taken within five years, and performance in any applicable courses taken prior to admission. A goal statement and three letters of reference from instructors or supervisors familiar with the applicant´s professional and academic work are also required.

Applicants must submit:

  • A completed Graduate School Online Application
  • A Resume
  • Official transcripts of all previous college and/or university studies,
  • Three letters of recommendation at least one of which should be from a college or university faculty member: (see |Resources/Reference-Report-for-Graduate-Study]),
  • GRE scores or scores on the Miller Analogies Test MAT (taken within the last 5 years)
  • A personal statement of goals and scholarly interests, and any evidence of your ability to succeed in a graduate program,

Application deadlines:

To be considered for admission, your complete application, including all required supplemental materials must be post-marked no later than:

  • For Fall admission: March 1st (1st round), June 1st (2nd round).
  • For Spring admission: November 1st.


However, applications are accepted throughout the semester for both the fall and spring terms. Completed applications received by May 1 for Fall and November 1 for Spring are guaranteed a decision for the upcoming term. Applications received after the stated deadlines will be reviewed on a space available basis. We will review applications as soon as they are complete and notify the applicant in as timely a manner as possible.
