Teacher Certification Programs at Temple (Graduate)
For applicants who already hold a bachelor’s degree in any field but would like to explore the possibility of becoming a certified classroom teacher, we offer three post-baccalaureate paths: Teacher Certification-only, Teacher Certification + Master’s, and the Transition to Teaching (E = MC2 ) program.
Option 1: Teacher Certification-only Program
Students who wish to gain only PA Certification without earning a Master's degree will take decreased coursework within the
Option 2: Teacher Certification Master's Program (Certification + Master’s) Students who complete the Master's program earn a teaching certificate in Career & Technical Education*, Middle Grades Education, or Secondary Education while also earning a Master’s of Education degree. CTE Master's degree program concentrations include:
- Business, Computer, and Information Technology Education (Ed.M.)
- Industrial Education (Ed.M.)
- Marketing Education (Ed.M.)
Option 3: Transition to Teaching (E = MC2) Program E=mc², Educating Middle-Grades Teachers for Challenging Contexts, is a program designed to train midcareer and early retiree mathematics and science professionals as middle-grade teachers. E=mc² provides an accelerated path to Pennsylvania teaching certification that also enables professionals to begin the program while maintaining their current jobs. Participants receive practical and rigorous preparation to meet the needs of individual middle school students, with program academic coursework thoroughly integrated with field-based experiences.
*NOTE: Temple Harrisburg offers only the Career & Technical Education certification. Core courses in CTE are available in Harrisburg and the remainder would be taken in Ambler/Fort Washington or Main campus. Other certification programs may be pursued via a combination of online learning and courses offered at Main and Ambler/Fort Washington campuses.

Teacher Certification and Degree Programs for Current Teachers
Add-On Certification
Applicants who currently hold an Instructional I Pennsylvania Teaching Certification may be interested in exploring one of our add-on certification programs, including:
- Autism Endorsement Graduate Certificate Program
- English as a Second Language Program Specialist
- Special Education (PreK-8) - Certification Only
- Special Education (PreK-8, M.Ed.)- Certification + Master's Degree
Add-on certification programs may be offered as online, blended/hybrid courses, and Harrisburg students may complete some courses via video conference with Main campus. Additionally, add-on certification programs are frequently offered as special summer or accelerated programs throughout the region. Check the program websites for upcoming offerings and details.
Master's Completion Program
The Master's in Education Degree Completion program is designed for Temple University students who received certification upon completing a non-degree post-baccalaureate program at Temple. Through this program, students can return to Temple to earn a Master's degree in Education by completing three additional courses.
- Students with Elementary Education Certification earn a M.S.Ed.
- Students with Secondary Education and/or K-12 Certification earn a Ed.M.
