Social Work faculty member Claudia Dewane has article published in Social Work Today

As a faculty member at a school of social work, I was excited to participate in a social work/Spanish immersion program in Costa Rica this past summer. My 19-year-old daughter, who is studying international relations in college, accompanied me. The program, cosponsored by the National Association of Social Workers - California and Norfolk State University School of Social Work, provides an opportunity for social workers, students, and others to have a comprehensive learning experience with a primary focus on Latino culture. Developing Spanish language skills and learning about Latino social issues and service delivery were the goals.

Loan Forgiveness for Social Workers

College Cost Reduction Act of 2007

Student borrowers can obtain information about the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 (H.R. 2669). The number for the Federal Student Aid Information Center is 1(800) 433-3243. The law forgives outstanding education debt for those persons that meet the eligibility requirements. Those that would benefit are employees that have made 120 monthly payments on their loans while serving full-time in social work in public child or family service agencies, government, nonprofit, military, education, and others areas. The loan forgiveness provisions became effective on October 1, 2007. It is important to note that payments made after October 1, 2007 on an existing loan can count towards the 120 payments if the loan meets certain criteria.

Dean of Temple University's College of Education is Keynote Speaker at Harrisburg High

At 384 students, it was Harrisburg´s biggest in decades, according to Mayor Stephen R. Reed, who has overseen the district since a December 2000 state-approved mayoral takeover.

With 74 percent of the graduates accepted for post-secondary education, the class of 2007 made Harrisburg High history, Reed said.

"We´ve got a lot to celebrate," Reed cheered.

Upon hearing the high ambitions of the class, keynote speaker C. Kent McGuire, dean of Temple University´s College of Education, interrupted his speech to give out his e-mail address in hopes of attracting students.
