STOP Abuse of Older PennsylvaniansIf you suspect a person 60 or over is a victim of abuse, call 1-800-490-8505 or contact a Local Area Agency on Aging ![]() Introduction to Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral StrategiesThis workshop is intended to assist participants in moving clients through the treatment process. The first part of the workshop provides an introduction to motivational interviewing; a client centered, directive technique, designed to help clients change their behavior by exploring and resolving ambivalence. It has been used for treatment engagement and adherence, substance problems, eating disorders, and health care protocols. Basic motivational interviewing skills will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will have the opportunity to practice and receive feedback in a safe and supportive environment. The second part of the workshop will teach the basics of a very systematic approach to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. While CBT is a highly effective treatment, a substantive number of individuals refuse treatment, fail to respond to treatment, or respond only partially. Ambivalence about change or abut engaging in treatment is often present. Motivational interviewing as an adjunct to CBT is often effective with clients resistant to and significantly ambivalent about change based techniques. Objectives
