SPECIAL TOPICS IN SOCIAL WORK:TUH School of Social Administration has developed 7one credit courses rich in the following specific socialwork areas: Loss and Grief, Trauma of Rape, DramaTherapy, Violence and Abuse in Childhood, FamilyAddiction and International Social Work Issues. Coursesare accessible to students in the MSW program as wellas to professionals in the community who may beinterested in specialized content area for professionaldevelopment.
Saturday June 13: Trauma of Rape 9:00am to 5:00pm (12-1 lunch) Instructor: Deborah Hill, LCSW, BCD, RTCThis course is a comprehensive study of rape and its powerful effects. Information will be provided from legal, cultural, familialand psychological disciplines. Participants will have the ability to discern rape myths and stereotypes and learn multi-modal paradigms of treatment Saturday June 20: Loss and Grief 9:00am to 5:00pm (12-1 lunch) Instructor: Lisa Zoll, LCSWThroughout the life cycle individuals experience various losses of persons, places, and things. The complexity of reactionsto such losses impacts individuals, family systems, and communities. This course will address concepts of a theoretical nature to help professionalsbetter understand the loss and grief process. Saturday July 11: Trauma of Rape 9:00am to 5:00pm (12-1 lunch) Instructor: Deborah Shain, LCSW, BCDThis course is designed to provide clinicians with the skills necessary to provide social work services and therapy forsurvivors, their partners, Saturday July 18, International Social Work Issues for the Domestic Practitioner 9:00am to 5:00pm (12-1 lunch)This course is aimed at the participant with minimal knowledge of international social work and associated issues. Buildingon the ethical concept of cultural competence, the emphasis is international issues related to domestic social work including human trafficking,refugees, asylum seekers and international adoptions. Saturday Aug. 1: Violence and Abuse in Childhood 9:00am to 5:00pm (12-1 lunch)This course will examine the psychological and sociological impact of violence and abuse in childhood. Psychological maltreat-ment, neglect, physical and sexual abuse will be reviewed. The theories underlying these phenomena, along with their prevalence and cultural signifi-cance will be studied. Participants will leave with an ability to critically analyze the systems in place to support children and will be equipped with anunderstanding of the advocacy role of the social worker in creating social change. Saturday August 8, Family Addiction: Evidenced Based Approaches 9:00am to 5:00pm (12-1 lunch)This course is about family addiction and its effects on children/adolescents/young adults.
