CBT Strategies (Morning) Clinical Introduction to Weight Loss Surgery Patients (Afternoon)

This 3 hour workshop will review the basic principles and applications of a very systematic approach to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT is a research supported short-term therapy approach that is particularly applicable in today´s practice environment. The instructive nature of CBT produces long term results because it teaches clients strategies and skills they can apply to current and future concerns. Participants will experience an introduction to the theoretical foundations and be introduced to evidence based techniques to treat a range of client concerns.

Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of CBT
  • Understand how to structure the therapeutic process
  • Help clients identify thoughts and irrational beliefs

PMDescription:

This 3 hour workshop will provide basic information to clinicians who work with clients who have had WeightLoss Surgery. It will provide them with information about the different types of surgeries and the psychological changes that can be problematic for clients. It will also provide strategies to help the client navigate the new landscape of no longer being “the fat one” and what emotions that brings up for them. Exercises, tools, and resources will be provided to assist the clinician in developing effective treatment planning for their clients.

Objectives:

  • Identify the various weight loss surgery options
  • Understand the reasons for Psychological Clearances
  • Identify the stages of change after weight loss surgery
  • Have increased knowledge about hormonal imbalances inWLS patients and how mood is affected
  • Educate patients regarding WLS and potential impact on relationships as well as cross addictions
  • Understand and identify the disconnect between what the patient sees in the mirror and scale and related feelings
  • Apply new techniques in their work with WLS clients to enhance effectiveness

Presenter: Nicole Lewis, LCSW, CEAP, SAP

Nicole Lewis is currently seeing clients in private practice, is an adjunct professor at HACC and works in Clinical Care Management at CBHNP. As a clinician, she specializes in treatment of addictions, mental health, marital conflict, transgender issues, and in working with Post Weight Loss Surgery Clients. She has an extensive background in the treatment of addictions and the use of cognitive behavioral therapies. This experience has lead to a specialty in using these concepts to help Post Weight Loss Surgery Clients deal with the emotional, psychological, and addictive components of their relationship with food. As well as being a clinician, Nicole is also a Post Weight Loss Surgery Patient. In 2006 she underwent Rou en Y Gastric Bypass, and has learned firsthand what challenges arise post-op, and has utilized this experience and her clinical background to help other post-ops as well. Nicole has an undergraduate degree from ECU in Family and Community Service, and a Masters Degree in Social Work from Widener University. She has gone on to obtain her LCSW, her CEAP, and SAP certification. She has provided LCSW candidates with supervision, and has provided trainings in the work place on various topics requested through Employers EAP benefits.
