The workshop will focus on postpartum depression & bipolar disorder during the pregnancy & postpartum periods.

The target audience for the workshop is social workers, nurses & other mental health professionals who come in contact with young mothers & babies during the perinatal period. All persons interested in learning more about this important topic are welcome to attend.
We seek to provide education on appropriate screening & identification of perinatal mood disorders. We also hope to increase understanding of the causes & interventions related to mood disorders during pregnancy and postpartum periods.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this program/conference participants will be able to:

  • Understand the biological & psychosocial impact of perinatal mood disorders on women, families & children across the lifespan.
  • Identify differences between “baby blues,” postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis.
  • Identify common signs & symptoms of perinatal mood disorders.
  • Utilize screening tools for mood disorders in women during pregnancy & postpartum periods.
  • Increase knowledge regarding effective psychosocial therapeutic intervention strategies to assist women with perinatal mood disorder.
  • Discuss risk/benefits of pharmacological treatment & symptom management for perinatal mood disorders.
  • Discuss strategies to facilitate continuity of care & treatment among interdisciplinary care providers to improve screening & referral for treatment.

Continuing Education:

The program has been approved for 3 continuing education hours. Accredited Schools of social work are pre-approved providers of continuing education by the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists & Professional Counselors. Temple University School of Social Administration is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Certificates of attendance documenting 3 continuing education hours will be issued by Temple University Harrisburg for a fee of $10.00 per certificate. Application for nursing CE´s is pending approval by AACN for 4 category A hours.
