WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This 6 hour workshop will provide opportunities for participantsto acquire knowledge about professional, legaland ethical standards of practice in health care, as well asopportunities to further understand their role in competentethical social work practice and the instances inwhich legal and professional standards may conflict. Aninteractive discussion method will be utilized to developparticipant skill and depth in applying ethical and legalprinciples to health care situations. This workshop focuseson our professional responsibilities to patients; clientrights of autonomy, informed consent, confidentiality,respect for persons and boundaries; and legal aspectsrelevant to practice in health care.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this workshop participants will
be able to:

  • Identify historical trends in the evolution of medical andsocial work ethics@Gain an increased understanding of the evolution of thelaw´s involvement in health care
  • Describe and discuss common areas of legal involvementin health care
  • Gain an increased appreciation for the relevant bodies oflaw and their application to health care
  • Identify ethical issues that occur in health care
  • Compare and contrast legal and ethical positions inhealth care
  • Explain the continuing development of lawin health carewith particular reference to Pennsylvania lawand practice
  • Develop critical assessment and skill in applying ethicalprinciples to health care situations
  • Develop critical assessment skills in discerning when legalinvolvement is needed in health care situations
  • Apply an ethical decision-making process to a variety ofhealth care situations.

LOCATION

This workshop will be held at Temple UniversityHarrisburg, 234 Strawberry Square Harrisburg, PA.Complete directions to the facility will be providedwith registration confirmation. All program materialswill be provided.Note: Due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, streetparking will be free on Jan. 19th.

AGENDA

Registration opens at 8:00am and theWorkshop will begin at 9:00am.Lunch is on your own from noon until1:00pm, and the Workshop will end at4:30pm.Two 15 minute breaks will be provided; onein morning and one in afternoon.

PRESENTERS

Chris Dubble
Chris is a social worker specializing
in health care and
geriatric social work. He
received his MSW from
Temple University in 1999
and is currently working on
his Doctorate from Fordham University. He recently
served as the manager of care coordination at
Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He is currently
a facultymember at Temple University and program
manager for the Department of Aging´s Institute on
Protective Services at Temple University.

Ronald W. Costen,
PhD., Esquire
Attorney Costen is a Professor
at Temple University´s School
of Social Administration. He
also directs Temple´s Institute
on Protective Services. Dr.
Costen is a specialist in the
area of recognizing and preventing
abuse and neglect of elderly and disabled. He
has taught in the areas of aging and health care for
over 25 years. He served for a number of years as a
Pennsylvania Deputy Attorney General and as an
Assistant District Attorney in Lackawanna County,
Pennsylvania, prosecuting cases involving abuse and
neglect of the elderly and individuals in health care
settings.
Both Attorney Costen and Mr. Dubble are frequent
lecturers and trainers in these areas and have a
wealth of knowledge
