Research:

I received my BA in Sociology from Southern University; MS in Urban Planning from Tulane University and PhD in Geography from The Ohio State University. Prior to 1996, most of my work had focused on issues of economic development in Africa and the Third World. My specific interests were informal activities, environment degradation, and gender. My research sought to answer questions of where, why, and "so what?" From 1996-2000, I was Director of the nationally recognized "Finding A Way (FAW)" project funded by NSF/NCGE which explored issues of pedagogy and under-representation in geography classrooms. We produced a number of peer reviewed papers, institute guides and most significantly, a video detailing the activities of FAW in Philadelphia. In 2001, I was a Visiting Professor of Women's Studies at York University/Toronto Canada. During my time there, I pursued my dual interests in photography and geography. I am also co-author of Growing Up in America: An Atlas of Youth in the USA. My current interests are directed toward geovisualization, specifically the use of still photography in geographical research.
