This is a basic course in general biochemistry plus selected current topics.

8204. Structure, Synthesis, and Degradation of Macromolecules   (4 s.h.)

Topics covered include structure and synthesis of DNA and RNA, recombination, DNA repair, regulation of gene expression, the genetic code, protein synthesis, and techniques of molecular biology.

8211. Introduction to Research Methodology   (1 s.h.)
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

Instruction is provided in biochemical research techniques such as column and gel chromatography, isotope tracer techniques, purification and assay of enzymes, cell culture and fractionation techniques, and electrophoretic separation methods.

8251. Enzymes and Proteins   (4 s.h.)

This course covers theory and practice of techniques used in the physical and chemical properties of proteins, including active site chemistry. Also explored is the use of physical, steady-state, perturbation, and equilibrium techniques for the determination of the mechanism of action of enzyme catalysis.
