Doctoral Candidate in Psychology Awarded 2009 Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Fellowship:

Johanna Carpenter, a doctoral candidate in Psychology, has been awarded an Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Fellowship by the American Psychological Foundation to support her research in child psychology during the 2009-2010 academic year.  The $25,000 stipend will allow Ms. Carpenter to continue the research she began during her practicum training at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children this past year.  She is studying how children's behavioral problems are related to difficulties with language during the preschool years. Read more.

Doctoral Candidate in Anthropology Awarded 2009 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship:

Beth Uzwiak, a doctoral candidate in Anthropology, has been awarded a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for 2009 by the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation.  This award reflects the selection committees’ confidence in the excellence of Ms. Uzwiak’s preparation and the contribution she will make to the study of ethical and religious values with her dissertation entitled Mediating Violence: "Witnessing Publics," Nationalism, Gender, and the Ethics of Human Rights

.  Ms. Uzwiak will receive a 12-month stipend of $24,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year to devote herself full time to dissertation research and writing. Newcombe Fellowships are highly competitive, with only about 7% of all applicants selected as fellows.  Ms. Uzwiak is in good company, as indicated by the full list of 2009 Newcombe Fellows.

Tyler Painting Graduate Awarded Artist Residency in the Core Program:

Robert Nick Barbee, a May 2009 graduate of the Tyler School of Art's M.F.A. program in Painting, has been awarded an artist residency in the Core Program.  Established in 1982 within the Glassell School of Art, the teaching wing of Houston's Museum of Fine Arts, the Core Program encourages intensive and innovative studio practice along with an understanding of that practice through the elaboration of an intellectual framework.  The Core Program awards one- and two-year residencies to highly motivated exceptional visual artists and art scholars who have completed their graduate training and are on their way to developing a professional career.  Each artist-in-residence is given a private studio space, 24-hour access to school facilities and equipment, and a $10,000 stipend.

M.P.H. Candidate Named 2009-2010 Schweitzer Fellow:

Alesia Mitchell, a graduate student pursuing an M.P.H. in Public Health's Social and Behavioral Health Sciences concentration, has been named a 2009-2010 Schweitzer Fellow by the Greater Philadelphia Schweitzer Fellowship® Program.  As a Schweitzer Fellow, Ms. Mitchell will devote more than 200 hours of service to local communities lacking access to adequate health services as a way to honor the legacy of Dr. Albert Schweitzer.  Her community service project, which is called the S.H.A.P.E.E. (Setting

Healthy Attitudes for Positive Eating and Exercise) Project, addresses the childhood obesity epidemic and will be offered in West and Southwest Philadelphia. Ms. Mitchell will receive a $2,000 stipend during the course of her Fellowship year.

Online Tutorials Now Available for the ProQuest UMI Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) Administrator:

Tutorials with screenshots and narration are now available to enable students to electronically submit theses and dissertations. The tutorials are segmented so that you can view, at your convenience, as much or as little as you would like.  Access the tutorials at http://www.temple.edu/grad/etd_tutorials.  The site where theses and dissertations can actually be uploaded is found at http://www.etdadmin.com/temple.

Oral English Proficiency Required of All TAs:

All incoming TAs who are non-native speakers of English must be certified in English prior to assuming their classroom teaching responsibilities. The Writing Center Offers Three Programs for Doctoral Students:

The Writing Center has instituted three programs for doctoral students. Dissertation boot camp provides a disciplined atmosphere in which dissertation writers can undertake their work. Brown bag lunch seminars are offered on a variety of timely topics.  And dissertation writing groups meet regularly to give dissertation writers a forum in which to share their work-in-progress and receive feedback.
