Admission Requirements and Deadlines

Letters of Reference:
Number Required: 2
From Whom: Letters of recommendation should be obtained from college/university faculty members, gallery directors, and/or curators familiar with the applicant's academic and artistic competence.
Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:
Five courses in Art History are required for admission consideration: two surveys and one upper-level course in each of three areas to include Ancient or Medieval art; Renaissance or Baroque art; and nineteenth- or twentieth-century art.
Applicants to the program who meet the prerequisites, except in the number of courses, may be admitted conditionally. These students will be permitted to enroll in a maximum of four undergraduate courses to complete the required prerequisites.
Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:
A baccalaureate degree is required, but it need not be in Art History.
Statement of Goals:
The Statement of Goals should be approximately
500-1,000 words in length and should include the following
elements: your interest in Temple's program; your research goals; your future career goals; and your
academic and research achievements.
Standardized Test Scores:
The GRE is required. Scores are typically in the 50-65% range, particularly on the verbal section.
Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 79 internet-based.
Resume:
A resume is required.
Writing Sample:
The writing sample should demonstrate your ability to research and write a scholarly paper on a topic in Art History. The paper should be no more than 10 pages in length and fully referenced according to a professional, scholarly style manual.
Program Requirements
General Program Requirements:
Number of Didactic Credits Required Beyond the Baccalaureate: 30 - 36
Students choose between two tracks. The thesis track requires 30 s.h. of coursework. The fine arts administration track requires 36 s.h. of coursework.
THESIS TRACK:
Required Courses:
21 credits in Art History
9 credits taken outside the Art History department
Internship: No internship is required.
Language Examination: A language examination is required. Students are required to demonstrate a reading knowledge of two foreign languages: German and either French or Italian.
FINE ARTS ADMINISTRATION TRACK:
Required Courses:
15 credits in Art History
12 credits in the Fox School of Business and Management
3 additional credits in either Art History or courses in the Fox School
Internship: An internship is required. Following the completion of all course requirements, students complete an internship for which six credits are granted.
Language Examination: A language examination is required. Students are required to demonstrate a reading knowledge of two foreign languages: German and either French or Italian.
Culminating Events:
Comprehensive Examination:
The comprehensive exam is a slide examination covering all of western art. It is usually taken in the third semester of study. The exam is applicable for both the thesis and the fine arts administration tracks.
Thesis:
Students completing the thesis option need to write a master's thesis, a document detailing independent research that demonstrates the student's mastery of his/her primary area of interest.
Internship:
The internship constitutes the culminating event for students completing the fine arts administration option.

About the Program
The Department of Art History offers courses of study leading to the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The M.A. is intended to provide breadth and thoroughness in the study of Art History, either as preparation for future graduate study or as the foundation for careers in related areas.

Students are required to complete the degree program through classes offered before and after 4:30 p.m. Students are also able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

Interdisciplinary Study:
Students planning to enter the field of fine arts administration can choose a special option, which combines Art History and graduate business courses in the Fox School of Business and Management.

Study Abroad:
Students researching Italian topics may be eligible for a fellowship to study in Rome. Doctoral students have priority. In addition, opportunities for study and excavating abroad are offered in the summer.

Areas of Specialization:
The curriculum includes courses in all periods and phases of Western art history, as well as special concentrations in Aegean, Greek, and Roman art; Renaissance and Baroque painting, sculpture, and architecture; Indian and Southeast Asian art and architecture; and the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It also introduces a wide variety of critical methods and approaches.

Financing Opportunities
The principal duties of a Teaching Assistant include assisting faculty in classroom instruction; preparing material for lectures; conducting museum field trips, tutorials, and discussion sections; and grading quizzes. Assistantships carry a stipend and full tuition remission for up to 9 credits per semester. Applications should include a statement of previous teaching and/or research experience, areas of interest and future goals, unofficial transcripts, and a curriculum vitae. Teaching Assistantships are ordinarily reserved for doctoral students.
Exceptionally qualified students who intend to continue for the Ph.D. may be nominated for prestigious Presidential, University, and Future Faculty Fellowships. Early January application to the Ph.D. program is required.
Work-study grants can be used to assist in the image-digitizing project and other slide room activities.
