Admission Requirements and Deadlines
Application Deadline:

Letters of Reference:

Number Required: 3

From Whom: Letters of recommendation should be obtained from college/university faculty, art teachers or supervisors, curators or gallery directors familiar with academic and artistic competence.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree, 40 undergraduate studio credits and 9 art history credits.

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

A degree in Art or Art Education is required.

Statement of Goals:

The Statement of Goals should be approximately 500-1,000 words and should include the following elements: your interest in Temple's program in particular; your future career goals; and your academic and artistic endeavors and achievements.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE/MAT is required. 50th percentile or higher on the verbal and/or analytical sections of the GRE or MAT. Students with concerns about scores may contact the Art and Art Education Department Chairperson.

Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 79 internet-based.

Portfolio:

Twenty slides of original work showing a breadth of studio experience is required. Some examples of drawing must be included in the slides.

Resume:

A resume is required.

Transfer Credit:

Upon approval of the Art Education Coordinator, the student's advisor, and the Associate Dean, up to nine credits of post-graduate work completed at Temple University within a five year deadline may be transferred into the program. Up to 6 credits of graduate course work taken at other accredited institutions within the prior five years before matriculation may be considered for transfer into the program after the student has enrolled. No decisions are made until students have successfully completed 15 matriculated credit hours of the degree. The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is 9.

Required Courses:
Core of Required studies in Art Education (17 s.h.)

Elective Studio Art courses (15 s.h.)

Required Art History (6 s.h.)

Ed Psych 541, Ed Psych 520, Art Ed 402 (9 s.h., depending on academic background)

Students must earn credits in the professional sequence which includes courses in educational psychology, education, art education methods, an internship, and student teaching in art.

Internship: An internship is required. Students must complete an internship as required.

Language Examination: No language examination is required.

Culminating Events:

Thesis:

The thesis for Ed.M. students is a scholarly master's paper developed through your research under the guidance of an advisor.

About the Program

The Master of Education with a Major in Art is designed for the practicing art teacher or supervisor of elementary or secondary art, as well as the individual with an undergraduate art background seeking professional preparation to teach art. This program encourages development as a creative artist/teacher with a breadth of study through and about art, along with specialized research demonstrating awareness of significant issues in art education.

Time Limit for Degree Completion: 4 years

Campus Location:

Main Campus, Tyler

Students must take a significant number of required and elective courses at Tyler campus. Additional coursework may be required at Main or Ambler campus.

Full-Time/Part-Time Status:

Students are required to complete the degree program through classes offered before and after 4:30 p.m. Students able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

Licensure:

The Ed.M. with Teaching Certification Program, 44-47 credits, along with the successful completion of the state required PRAXIS and Art Education Examinations, provides all the requirements for PA State Certification in Art for kindergarten through twelfth grade. Pennsylvania Teaching Certification is awarded to United States citizens only.

Non-Degree Student Policy:

Only certain courses are available to non-matriculated graduate students.

Financing Opportunities

Teaching Assistant (TA) or Academic Intern (AI): The principal duties include assisting faculty members in preparing apparatus or materials for demonstrations, maintenance and/or monitoring of studio and exhibition areas and equipment.
