697. Individual Research: Music Therapy. (1-3 s.h.)

Individual and group supervision of clinical projects and research thesis. By permission of the instructor.

698. M.M. Final Project: Music Education. (1-3 s.h.)

Registration is limited to M.M. candidates in Music Education with the permission of an adviser. Continuous registration in the fall and spring semesters is required until the project is completed.

699. Research Seminar in Music Education. (3 s.h.)

Prerequisite: 670 or equivalent and permission of instructor.

Planning and execution of pre-dissertation research projects is discussed. Participants work independently and in small groups to acquire skills necessary for completion of the dissertations.

799. Preliminary Examination Preparation. (1-6 s.h.)

For doctoral students in Music Education preparing to sit for the Preliminary Examinations.

805. Producing and Directing the Secondary School Musical -Workshop. (3 s.h.)

Directing, selecting, casting, rehearsing, producing school musicals. Public relations, staff, dynamics, conducting, score preparation, re-orchestration, rehearsals, lighting, scenic design, construction, and staging will be considered.

809. Creative Approaches in Elementary Music Workshop. (3 s.h.)

Exploration of various current techniques, and manner in which they can be used to develop musical concepts and cultivate musical skills in large and small groups and in individualized settings. Opportunities to construct teaching materials and equipment will be provided through the facilities of the Presser Learning Center.

832. Music Therapy Doctoral Seminar. (1-3 s.h.)

Seminar for examining current issues in music therapy and psychoeducational processes, and particularly those that warrant further research. Dissertation proposals are presented for critique and analysis.

834. Instrument Repair for the Band Director -Workshop. (3 s.h.)

Workshop designed to give hands-on experience in proper cleaning of instruments and repair basics, including: pad and cork replacement, spring replacement, pad seating, key adjustment, and stuck mouthpieces/tuning slides. Additional fee, payable on the first day of class to cover cost of course materials. Participants are asked to bring a clarinet, flute, trumpet, and saxophone if possible.

835. Methods and Techniques in Instrumental Music -Workshop. (3 s.h.)

Seminar for the instrumental teacher at all levels of instruction. Practical application of appropriate methods and techniques. Special emphasis on beginning instrumental instruction based on contemporary learning theory. Other topics include testing, recruiting, and score reading.

843. Using Computers for Music Printing and Composing. (3 s.h.)

Course designed for music educators and other music professionals seeking basic skills in music technology. Using Macintosh computers, students use music notation software and music sequencing software to produce publication-quality music notation and expressive MIDI recordings. Prior computer experience is not required.

844. Multimedia and the Internet -Workshop. (3 s.h.)

Designed to introduce students to using Hypertext, CD-ROM, MIDI, and the World Wide Web in the study of music.

845. Jump Right In -Instrumental Book 1. (3 s.h.)

Workshop designed to introduce the instrumental teacher and the general music teacher who teaches recorder to Book 1 of Jump Right In: The Instrumental Series.

846. Jump Right In -Instrumental Book 2. (3 s.h.)Workshop designed to introduce the instrumental teacher to Book 2 of Jump Right In: The Instrumental Series.

847. Audiation Based Improvisation -Workshop. (3 s.h.)

Designed for the general, vocal and instrumental music teachers, this workshop provides an understanding of music learning through improvisation at all levels of instruction.

848. Music and Movement -Workshop. (3 s.h.)

Participants will experience an intensive, hands-on workshop featuring contemporary techniques and suggested teaching materials for movement for children of all ages. Focus will be on self space and shared space, continuous fluid and discrete movement, movement through levels of space, and development of movement lessons appropriate for children.

849. Writing Final Projects. (3 s.h.)

With the help of a new textbook, The Readable Thesis: A Guide to Formal Writing for Efficient Reading, students will learn to avoid some of the more common writing foibles, will evaluate writing and have their writing evaluated, and will explore possibilities for the form and substance of final projects, from monographs to theses and dissertations.

865. Innovative Instrumental Methods -Workshop. (3 s.h.)

An intensive workshop designed to show how instrumental students can be taught to perform, improvise, and read music with a good sense of intonation and steady tempo. Beginning instrumental instruction will be emphasized. Instrumental teachers at all levels will benefit.

884-885-886-887-888. Music Therapy: Special Topics. (1-3 s.h.)

An in-depth examination of a particular issue, problem or topic in music therapy practice, research or theory. Sample topics include: Vocal Methods, Improvisational Assessment, International Music Therapy Practice.

899. Pre-Dissertation Research. (1-6 s.h.)

For doctoral students in Music Education who have passed the Preliminary Examinations and who do not yet have an approved dissertation proposal.

954. Music Therapy Doctoral Dissertation. (1-3 s.h.)

Individual supervision of doctoral research and writing of the final dissertation.

999. Dissertation in Music Education. (1-6 s.h.)

Registration is limited to Ph.D. candidates in Music Education with the permission of an adviser. Continuous registration in the fall and spring semesters is required until the oral defense has been passed.

General Statement

The Department of Dance offers programs of study leading to the Master of Education, Master of Fine Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. All students are expected to have a command of the discipline of dance, including its modes as a performing arts and medium of inquiry.

The department's mission places high value on the role of dance in a pluralistic, multicultural society. Graduates perform and choreograph with companies throughout the world, teach at all levels of education, serve as arts administrators and policy-makers for the arts, and publish extensively.

Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted continuously but will be processed on the following dates: February1, April 1, and May 1. Auditions and/or interviews are required and are scheduled for February and April. Individual auditions and interviews may be granted by the department.

Financial Aid

The Dance Department offers several graduate teaching assistantships. Deadline for TA applications is December 1 for continuing students and January 15 for entering students.
