Course Descriptions

Music Education -Music Education majors conduct an oral defense of the final written project in lieu of the qualifying examination.

Music History -Music History majors must take a five-hour written qualifying examination.

Music Theory -Music Theory majors take a three-hour written qualifying examination.

Music Therapy -The written qualifying examination in Music Therapy covers:

1. Basic methods and techniques of music therapy.

2. Principles of assessment and evaluation.

3. Various client populations.

4. Various theoretical approaches to individual and group therapy.

5. Existing research literature.

6. The examination does not limit its scope to the course work taken at the Esther Boyer College of Music. Therefore, the student is expected to study comprehensively in preparation for this examination.

Opera majors must have accumulated at least two major adjudicated roles or one major and two minor adjudicated roles in addition to opera theater assignments to meet this requirement.

Performance Majors -The master's recital may replace the written examination in the Performance (instrumental, keyboard, and voice) curriculums.

Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music curriculum candidates must accompany one student recital in the first semester of study and must accompany two full senior or master's recitals in each of the following three semesters. In addition, performance of a full chamber music work is required each semester.

E. Comprehensive Examination in Music Literature

All candidates for the Master of Music degree are required to take a one-hour comprehensive examination in music literature and theory. A listening of l00 musical works of the standard literature from the Middle Ages through the 20th century is available to the student when admitted to the College. It is suggested that this examination be taken in the penultimate term of study. The list is intended as an aid to preparation for the examination.

F. Recital

Majors in Performance must present a full recital program in the final term of study, on a date determined in the early summer months prior to the recital year. A Piano or Piano Accompanying major supervised by Professor Orkis will accompany the vocal or instrument recitalist. Choral Conducting majors present two recitals prior to the completion of the program. For Opera majors, a minimum of two major adjudicated roles or equivalent supporting roles is required, in addition to opera theater assignments.

Before the graduation recital is scheduled, the Temple University transcript must provide the following evidence:

1. The student has successfully completed private lessons during each semester prior to that in which the recital is programmed.

2. The student is approaching the completion of all required credits for graduation.

3. All grades of "Incomplete" in private lessons must be cleared before the student may apply for the graduation recital.

4. Master's degree candidates must have completed all diagnostic requirements before scheduling the recital.

After receiving approval from the jury and the major teacher in the applied area, a student should apply for the graduation recital date and complete the necessary recital arrangements through the Esther Boyer College of Music Recital Coordinator.

G. Final Written Project

Master's degree students majoring in Music Education, Music History, Music Theory, and Music Therapy must complete final written projects, as indicated below.

Music Education -In addition to 30 semester hours of course work, a final written project (2 s.h. minimum) is required of M.M. students majoring in Music Education.

Music History -Music History majors must submit a final written project.

Music Theory -Music Theory majors must submit a final written project that demonstrates competence in research and writing as well as the candidate's analytical abilities. The project should be confined to a work of an individual composer. Special permission should be requested for a project embracing an area other than that prescribed. Following consultation with a member of the graduate theory faculty, the candidate must submit a proposal to that faculty by the fourth week of the penultimate semester. The project in its final form is due by the seventh week of the semester in which graduation is expected.

Music Therapy -Music Therapy majors are required to complete two independent projects (e.g., scholarly papers, pilot research studies, clinical projects, case studies).

Professional Studies in Performance

A Professional Studies in Performance program which provides intensive training in the major performance area is offered for students who are already performing at the master's exit level in Performance, and for whom the College's doctoral program is not suitable. Professional Studies students are required to complete a minimum of 18 credits in two semesters of full-time study. While the curricula vary somewhat according to major instrument, all share an emphasis on private study and related performance courses (ensembles or repertoire courses). A certificate of participation is awarded at the conclusion of the program; no degree is awarded.

Curriculum -Surrounding the performance core are electives designed to meet the individual needs of the student. These may be advanced courses in music theory or music history, performance practice courses, non-music courses which support the students major study, or remedial courses designed to fill gaps in earlier study. Where appropriate to the student's needs, elective credit may also be fulfilled by additional repertoire or ensemble courses, but only if this does not limit the participation of students in the other programs of the College. No portion of the Professional Studies curriculum can be completed by credit transfer from another institution; credit earned in Professional Studies cannot be transferred to a Esther Boyer College of Music degree program.

Application Requirements -To be accepted as a Professional Studies student, the applicant must have completed a master's degree in Performance and must demonstrate a master's exit level of performance through audition. As with all graduate applicants, transcripts of previous study, letters of recommendation, a current repertoire list, and placement testing are required. Students interested in making application to the program should contact the Director of Music Admissions.
