Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP)
On March 25, 2006, the College of Liberal Arts, in cooperation with the Graduate School, hosted the First Annual Conference of the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) — Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBES) spearheaded by Northwestern University. It was the inaugural conference for not only Temple University, but the seven-member consortium known as the Great Lakes Alliances for SbeS (GLASS) as a whole. Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation.
Social Science Perspectives on Health Care: Disparities in the United States focused on how members of minority communities in the United States have suffered for many years from inadequate access to health care resources and services. Viewing this wide-ranging problem from the varied disciplines of Anthropology, Political Science, Psychology, Public Health, Sociology, and Urban Studies, the conference at Temple University was designed to explore research and policy issues. This interdisciplinary conference featured discussions by research faculty, practitioners, and graduate students on such topics as:
- Neighborhoods and access to health care.
- Use of the internet.
- Physicians and relationships with minority patients.
- Minorities in the health professions.
- City, state, and federal health programs.
- The role of private industry.
- Consumer groups and the politics of health care.
Social Science Perspectives on Health Care: Disparities in the United States was designed to open a conversation between research professionals and students planning to enter the field of social and behavioral sciences. In addition to panel presentations and symposia, a workshop for student attendees on graduate admissions and opportunities for graduate students was offered.
The conference proceedings were broadcast live on the day of the event to allow those who could not travel to Philadelphia to partake in the activities. The proceedings are still available for on-demand viewing at http://media.temple.edu:8999/cla/.
