Memorandum: Advocating for Temple

To: Temple University Community
From: Kenneth Lawrence Jr.,
Senior Vice President for Government, Community and Public Affairs

January is the start of a new year, a new semester and the new legislative session in Harrisburg. Over the next few months, Governor Corbett and the General Assembly will face the challenge of passing a balanced budget as the Pennsylvania Constitution requires.

As you are probably aware, nearly 20 percent of Temple's operating funds come from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth appropriation is critical to all of Temple's educational activities and demonstrates Pennsylvania's commitment to higher education. As the budget is drafted and debated, our elected officials will face difficult choices about funding priorities. I hope you will join me in communicating with your elected officials that Temple University and affordable higher education is a priority to keep.

The Temple Advocates Legislative Outreach Network (TALON) was established to help students, employees and alumni communicate with our elected officials. Please use TALON's website to contact your elected officials as they begin a new legislative session and urge them to continue to support Temple in upcoming budget deliberations. Your relationship with state leaders is critical in securing the Commonwealth's continued support, which in turn will allow Temple to fulfill our historic mission.
