RECENT NEWS
- The department now offers a Ph.D. in Geosciences. For more details about the new Ph.D. Program and how to apply, see the Graduate tab.
- A new faculty member, Dr. Ilya Buynevich, joins the department in August 2009. His specialties include coastal geomorphology, event sedimentology, and marine geology. He comes to Temple from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution where he has been conducting research on coastal evolution, aeolian landscape dynamics, and geological records of extreme events.
- Dr Jon Nyquist won one of the first three awards given for Innovative Teaching in General Education at the annual university award convocation.
- Undergraduates Bill Lukens and Alex Gibbs won several academic prizes before graduating this past spring, including the CST Research Symposium poster contest.
- The Geology Club has formed a student chapter of SEG (Society of Exploration Geophysicists).
- Temple hosted the 2009 Franklin Award Symposium on Deep Sea Ocean Floor Gas Vents. Featured was Frank Grassle, winner of the 2009 Franklin Medal in Earth and Environmental Science (April 2009).
- Thank you to all of the alumni who have donated to the student field camp and research fund. This money helps students defray costs. For stories of students' field camp experiences, check the February 2008 bulletin under News

- The department sponsoring an Earthquake Jump and talk about Earthquake Monitoring on the east coast: Monday November 17, 2008.

- The Fall 2008 field trip took students to the Adirondacks. More pictures here!

- Another fall field trip took hydrology students caving with the Philadelphia Grotto. More pictures here!

- Sarah Hetznecker, BA 1983, was inducted into the Temple University League for Entrepreneurial Women’s Hall of Fame on Oct 28, 2008. Heztnecker is director of project development, Conergy Americas, and founded a solar energy company with her husband, Gary Sheenan, also BA 1983. The League for Entrepreneurial Women recognizes outstanding leadership and promotes entrepreneurship in the Philadelphia region.
- Geology is now the DEPARTMENT OF EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE. The name change reflects the increasing diversity of the science performed in the Department but does not change the administrative or academic structure. The department continues to offer BS, BA and MS Geology degrees. We also continue to advise students seeking the BS in Environmental Science.
