Temple in the World/The World at Temple
Help celebrate Temple’s global dimensions at the third annual Global Temple Conference! This year’s conference will be held on November 11th, 2008, and will focus on International Education, International Research, and Globalization. Everyone from the Temple community—undergraduates, grad students, staff and faculty—is invited to submit proposals for academic and creative projects.
Last year’s conference included panel discussions, performances, films, posters, and exhibits. This year we’re looking to make the event even more inclusive, and we’d love your involvement! Proposals are due on September 15, 2008, and should be submitted electronically to global@temple.edu. They must be accompanied by the proposal form, which can be found here:
http://www.temple.edu/studyabroad/globaltemple/documents/proposal_form.pdf Creative arts proposals should also be accompanied by a portfolio of either slides or CD for visual art, DVD or video for performing artists.

World Languages Day 2008 Report:
2008 was the tenth (10th) year anniversary of the program! Each year a Consortium of Temple University Departments and Organizations dedicated to Language Learning, international culture, business and cooperation join together to sponsor this exciting opportunity.
The program is co-sponsored by the Temple CIBER (Center for International Business Education & Research), the World Languages Departments: FGIS (French, German, Italian, Slavic); Spanish & Portuguese; Critical Languages; Classics; and International Study Office, and the event is planned by a World Languages Day Committee co-chaired by: Kim Cahill, Director of Temple CIBER, and Ben Rifkin, Prof of Russian.
Area High Schools with languages programs are invited to apply for participation. The size of the assemblage is limited to 300 participants. When this number is reached, the program is set.
In 2008, we hosted 12 local schools with 24 different language groups. A schedule of classes, presentations, and panels was created using volunteer faulty, students and program specialists. Sample presentations were held on study abroad, Latin American Studies, History of Weimar Germany, introductory classes in Korean, Arabic, Russian and Chinese, as well as visits to regular university language classes and special Laboratory multi-media tech sessions.
The classes and presentations were followed by a general session, in which community experts and Temple scholars spoke on the importance, value and advantages of learning foreign languages and cultures. A special guest was Mr. Harris Baum, Esq. the Consul of the Republic of Korea.
After a full and stimulating program of cultural awareness and language learning, the visiting students were treated to a bounteous midday repast typical of the student cafeteria fare at Temple in Johnson-Hardwick cafeteria. All seemed most pleased with the ‘hands-on’ experience at a college meal. The visiting teachers also had a chance to sit, eat and chat with members of the Temple faculty.
Most attendees, Temple student guides, who provided vital personal connections to the visitors and vital knowledge of the campus, the Temple Community, and participating faculty all expressed delight with the enthusiasm of those engaged, and the impressions gained of Languages and Cultures in the modern world. We are already looking forward to a bigger and better program in 2009!
