Deirdre David, Professor Emerita of English, is the author of Fictions of Resolution in Three Victorian Novels (1981), Intellectual Women and Victorian Patriarchy (1987), Rule Britannia: Women, Empire, and Victorian Writing (1995), and Fanny Kemble: A Performed Life (2007). She also edited the Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel (2001), to be published in a second edition in 2012, and-edited with Eileen Gillooly Contemporary Dickens (2009). In 2012 Oxford University Press will publish her new literary biography, Olivia Manning: A Woman at War. This is the first scholarly biography of Olivia Manning, best known for her trilogies about WW2 (The Balkan Trilogy and The Levant Trilogy), and presents a comprehensive exploration of her rich and risky life. Professor David was fortunate in gaining access to a hitherto unexamined cache of manuscripts, letters, and miscellaneous documents left by Manning in the care of her closest female friend.
