Eli Goldblatt, Director of University Writing and Associate Professor of English, received the Richard Ohman Award for his article, “Alinsky’s Reveille: A Community-Organizing Model for Neighborhood-Based Literacy Projects," which appeared in the January 2005 issue of College English (67:3, pp. 274-295). Goldblatt's essay offers an account of principles adopted from the organizer, Saul Alinski (1909-1972), who trained César Chavez and Ivan Illich, among others. He suggests ways that Alinski's successful practices from the 1930s and 1940s could be useful in forming literacy partnerships between university programs and community organizations.
College English is one of the country's top refereed journals in composition studies. The Richard Ohman Award is made to an essay deemed by the journal's citation committee to be the most influential to appear in its pages for the year.
