Research Poster Competition!
During Temple University’s celebration of Engineer’s Week, the ECE Department was successful in this year’s research poster competition. The ECE Department would like to congratulations to two of our graduates: Fengcheng Wu and John Steinberg. Fengcheng Wu took first place for his research poster titled “Body Sensor Network and Wireless Fetal Monitoring System” and John Steinberg took third for his research poster titled “An Introduction to Mandarin Speech Recognition”. There were many interesting and well constructed research posters along with these two. We thank everyone who participated and look forward to what is in store for next year.

Medical Innovation: In the ECE Department!
A tactile imaging sensor developed by one of our professors is a great innovation that could assist doctors by providing early information about lesions and tumors. Chang-Hee Won, associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of Temple’s Control, Sensor, Network and Perception Laboratory has developed a method of quantifying human tactile sensation. In other words, Won has developed a prototype device that will not only emulate the human sense of touch but also define the mechanical properties associated with a particular touch. This device can assist doctors with the detection and definition of lumps, tumors, lesions and other irregularities. This conveniently portable device could be the future of medical examinations. We would like to congratulate Professor Won on his truly amazing innovation.

End of Semester IEEE Party!
Last week, Temple IEEE organized a nice party to celebrate the end of semester. Everybody was invited. Students received lots of positive emotions, which were really needed to take away stress before finals.
Thanks to everybody, who planned and organized this fun and memorable event!

Everybody, Join Us in the Showcase of Capstone Projects by Freshman Engineering Students!
On Wednesday Dec. 11 between 11am and 1pm, 155 freshman engineering students will showcase their capstone project in a final competition. This culminates a 13 week intensive experience where students were exposed to the fundamentals of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. This specific project involved the design, construction, and control, using an iPad, of a small-scale hovercraft. The students were divided up into teams for a of 36 groups. Each group had to first used computed aided design software to make all of the mechanical structure of the hovercraft. Once this was completed, the students then mounted various fans, motors, rudders, electronics to the hovercraft structure. Students then programmed the onboard microprocessor of the hovercraft to receive wireless commands from an iPad where the microprocessor converted the iPad commands into electrical control signals for the various motors and rudders on the hovercraft.
Prizes for 1st place are $1000, 2nd place $500, and 3rd place are $200 supplied by NASA PA Space Grant Consortium.

5th Semiannual Brown Bag Event
Nov. 11, 2011, TU IEEE was hosting 5th Semiannual Brown Bag Event. Forty students from the College of Engineering had some real hands on experience with circuit building and soldering. Invited guest, Joe Stoney, who had a lot of soldering experience during his career in the Navy, proudly accepted the instructor’s role for this event. Everybody had a great learning time.
Thanks Temple IEEE for an accellent event!

Congratulations to our student commencement speaker, Christopher Tufts!
The College of Engineering extents our warmest congratulations to the class of 2011 commencement speaker, Electrical & Computer Engineering major Christopher Tufts. Active in the IEEE and the recipient of the Victor Schutz Scholarship, Christopher has had an impressive, if non-traditional, college career. After spending several years working as a Master Automotive Technician at BMW, Christopher decided to return to school. He has done research with Dr Obeid in the Neural Instrumentation laboratory, and is anticipating attending graduate school in the future.

Dr. Iyad Obeid and Seven Temple Engineering Students Attended the 2011 Annual International Meeting of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society in Boston
The four graduate and three undergraduate engineering students attended technical presentations from leading universities in areas that included neural prosthetics, functional electrical muscle stimulation, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, and even entrepreneurship. In addition to attending talks, the Temple contingent discussed their own research with faculty members and other students from around the world. Two of the recently graduated students, Drs. Karthikeyan Balasubramanian and John Mountney, presented their work at a special panel on massively parallel computing solutions for neural engineering.
