New Faculty Fall 2009

The Mechanical Engineering Department would like to welcome our newest faculty members:

1) Dr. Nancy Pleshko

Dr. Pleshko received her PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from Rutgers University followed by two years of an NIH Training grant in Biomechanics at Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Pleshko was the Director of the Musculoskeletal Imaging and Spectroscopy Laboratory at the Hospital for Special Surgery, an affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical School in New York City, for 15 years. Her NIH-funded program focused primarily on cartilage and bone pathology and therapeutics. She also held appointments at Weill Cornell Medical School, and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at City College in Manhattan. Most recently, Dr. Pleshko was a Managing Scientist at Exponent Inc. in Philadelphia.

Dr. Pleshko’s research focuses on assessment of tissues at the molecular, cellular, and structural level through application of state-of-the-art vibrational spectroscopy, including mid- and near-infrared spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging, in concert with complementary techniques. She has developed substantial expertise over the past 20 years in basic and translational research in connective tissue pathophysiology and orthopedics, including osteoporosis and other bone pathologies, osteoarthritis and cartilage repair, and vascular tissue remodeling. Applications include establishing correlations between molecular tissue properties and mechanical and other functional properties, and assessment of therapeutic interventions. This includes evaluation of the effects of biological interventions, such as anti-resorptive agents for bone, as well as characterization of biomaterials for development of engineered tissues. She has further experience in assessment of growth and modification of engineered tissues.

2) Dr. Bin Wang

Dr. Wang received his PhD in BioMedical Engineering from Temple University in 2007 while he was a PhD Research Assistant from 2004 - 2007. His area of interest was in Vascular Biology. Dr Wang received a post-doctoral fellowship from the Medical College of Georgia where his research in vascular biology continued at the Vascular Biology Center in Augusta, Georgia. Research interest: Targeted Drug Delivery, Biofluid Mechanics, Radiation Oncology, Tissue Engineering, Microfluidics, Microvascular Blood Flow, Tissue Oxygenation.

3) Dr. Svetlana Neretina

Dr. Neretina received her Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada) in 2007 under the supervision of Peter Mascher. Her work in- volved the preparation and characterization of semiconductor thin films, nanoparti- cles, and nanowires using exotic growth pathways. After receiving a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Natural Science & Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC PDF) she joined the plasmonics group at the Georgia Institute of Technology under the supervision of Dr. Mostafa A. El-Sayed, the recent recipient of the National Medal of Science. Her current research is directed towards the nanofabrication and characterization of coupled semiconductor-plasmonic structures.
