Coursework
A significant portion of a mechanical engineering curriculum involves the study of mathematics, materials, basic mechanics, thermal science, and fluid mechanics. This theory and the associated analysis skills are then put into practical use in a sequence of design-oriented classes that emphasize open-ended problems. There are two optional concentrations in Energy Systems or Bioengineering in the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering.
In the College of Engineering, both theoretical and practical skills are developed and refined in cooperative internships. While hands-on mechanical skills can be an asset to a mechanical engineering student, skills in mathematics, science and computing are better predictors of ultimate success.
Faculty
Temple Engineering Faculty are noted for their talents in teaching, advising, mentoring, and scholarship and many faculty have been recognized regionally and nationally for their teaching, research, and service to the engineering profession. The College of Engineering faculty to student ratio about 20:1 and the size of a typical engineering class is 15-20 students.
Senior Design Projects
The Senior Design Project is a capstone course of the senior year for mechanical engineering students. This two-semester course is designed to create a professional work environment in which a team of students, along with a faculty advisor work together to provide a solution to a real-world engineering task.

- Fly-by-heat: Smart wing (finalist in the prestigious 2007 Collegiate Inventors Competition sponsored by National Inventors Hall of Fame)
- Design and development of a hybrid golf cart
- Prosthetic leg for runners
- Paper hang glider design for Energy Challenge (3rd place finish in Energy Challenge)
- Formula SAE Race Car
- Air conditioning design for an animal shelter
- Bone lengthening device for pediatric applications
Honors Program
Honors students at Temple University are exceptionally talented students who enjoy course sections designed exclusively for them; the latest technology is integrated into all sections. The distinguished Honors Program faculty challenge students in courses associated with the core curriculum of the University.
The Temple University Honors Program is available to students who have completed AP or high school honors courses, rank near the top of their class, and/or score in top percentiles on the SAT or ACT. The program is also available to transfer students who complete at least 24 credits at an ABET certified college and have earned at least a 3.5 GPA.
